This collectable tie was given to comedy legend Ben Elton by his good friend and fellow comedian Robbie Coltrane back in 1981 when Ben was 22!

Still great friends today, they were working together at Granada TV on a sketch show called Alfresco.

Alfresco was a TV series starring Robbie Coltrane, Ben Elton, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie in the early 80's. It totalled 13 episodes and was named Alfresco (from the Italian al fresco, meaning "in the fresh air") because, unusually for a comedy sketch show of the time, it was shot on location rather than in a studio. It was scheduled as an answer to the BBC's highly successful Not the Nine O'Clock News. Ben Elton was the main writer, with Fry and Laurie receiving writing credits by the second series.

Ben is a comedian, author, playwright and director. He was the leader of the British alternative comedy movement of the 1980s and a writer on such cult series as The Young Ones and Blackadder.  He was a sucessful stand-up comedian on stage and TV, famous for his 1980s left-wing political satire. Since then he has published a whopping thirteen best-selling novels.  He also wrote the musical's We Will Rock You (2010) and Love Never Dies (2010).  He is also famous for his 1980's ties!

Ben has signed this tie on the underside as shown in the pictures.

The tie comes with an amusing card hand written and signed by Ben Elton which says,

'This tie was given to me in 1981 by Robbie Coltrane. I was 22 and we were working together at Granada TV on a (failed) comedy sketch show called Alfresco.  We are still friends'.
